The Victorian government's App My State competition is an evolution on recent similar events like GovHack and Mashup Australia, and others. But this time, the event is backed up with many great sources of data relevant to Victorians and their app developers. http://data.vic.gov.au.
Both sites are groovy, web2 layouts and invite participation in lots of ways. Both from people with ideas, and people who want to put the effort in to build something. The Vic govt are clearly communicating their intention that the data is now available and they're encouraging public-good use. The App My State initiative also educates the government agencies on the other side of the fence, showing them their datasets can be hosted easily and there is a path through the copyright and licensing mess.
http://data.nsw.gov.au also deserves mention for a site with great usability and clarity, and http://data.australia.gov.au led the way.
It's great to see governments opening up through innovative use of their our data.
